Our SmartWay Commitment
Celadon Trucking Services is proud to be a SmartWay Transport Partner. The SmartWay Transport Partnership is an innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight industry to increase fuel efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.

By 2012, this voluntary partnership between various freight industry sectors aims to reduce between 33-66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions per year. At the same time, the initiative will result in fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of oil annually.

Our SmartWay Score
Celadon has earned a Shipper Index Factor (SIF) of 1.25. A SIF of 1.25 represents outstanding environmental performance and serves as confirmation that Celadon is utilizing most of the commercially available fuel saving strategies and is actively evaluating the latest emerging technologies. Partners with scores of 1.25 are awarded the honor of displaying the SmartWay Transport Partner logo, the EPA's symbol for superior fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

Celadon’s SIF of 1.25 is based on a SmartWay Carrier Score of 1.49 for 2007. Each year, Celadon uses the EPA’s Freight Logistics Environmental and Energy Tracking (FLEET) Performance Model to quantify the environmental performance of its fleet of vehicles. The FLEET model evaluates the effectiveness of the innovative fuel saving and emission reduction strategies that Celadon has integrated into its fleet operations. This allows Celadon to quantify the amount of fuel saved and CO2, NOx, and particulate matter (PM) emissions that have been eliminated, providing Celadon with a sense of how efficient its fleet operations are in a given year. The higher the Carrier score, the more efficient the operations. Celadon’s carrier score in 2006 was .99.

Our SmartWay Initiatives
To achieve this level of success, Celadon has made the following equipment changes:

  • Installed auxiliary air heaters on all trucks coming in over the past year to eliminate the engine’s need to idle in cold weather;
  • Installed ambient air temperature sensors on all trucks coming in over the past year to overrides the engine’s ability to run between the ambient of 70–20 degrees F;
  • Equipped trucks and trailers with the most fuel efficient duals available on the market:
    Goodyear G395 Fuel Max (steer tire)
    Goodyear G305 Fuel Max (drive tire)
    Goodyear G316 Fuel Max (trailer tire);
  • Accelerated new truck purchases planned for the next two years, all of which will include 2007 compliant engines in SmartWay-certified tractors:
    Freightliner Cascadia
    International ProStar
    Volvo VN Series;
  • Recalibrated new engines to produce less than 30 grams of NOx at an idle; and as a result, are certifying trucks with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as compliant with their emission standard;
  • Shortened trailer to tractor gaps to minimize aerodynamic drag;
  • Use of synthetic lubricants in all transmissions and differentials to minimize friction;
  • Reduction in maximum road speed for the entire fleet;
  • Conversion of trailer fleet to lightweight, high cube, 53’ plate trailers.
Our SmartWay Results
As a result of these initiatives, Celadon can already boast of the following impact on the environment:

When using Celadon as your truckload carrier, you can take pride in knowing that you are doing business with a company that has taken an aggressive, pro-active approach in doing its part for a cleaner environment.
